My experience learning English at the university

Today is our last blog, so it's a special blog. I'm going to talk about my experience learning English at the university. Well, this is my first formal english course. I had english classes when I was at school and I like english culture and music so I learn from that, but I never had a native teacher before, like Joe. I think that learnig english is very important for a health care professional, because we have to give medical attention to many people from different cultures and we have to be prepared for any sittuation. That's the reason why I'm going to talk about the importance of learning english at the university.

I've always being in love with English. I think it's a beautiful language, a very sophisticated one. I've always want to learn how to speak and how to write in english. Since I was a little child, I want to understand the lyrics of the songs that my father listened to. I wanted to sing them, but I wanted to understand what I was singing too. Also, I love english-speaking countries like The U.K and Australia, so that really encourages me to improve my english.

Also it's the universal language because many people from very different countries talk in english to make themselves understood. So, if we understand this language we can travel to other countries and make changes by helping people to learn how to take care of themselves. English is a very good tool to get closer to people. If we do this, we can educate them and make their lives get better.

I think that every single person should learn this language because it's universal and it opens doors to many different opportunities. A person who speaks english can aspire to get a better job and earn more money. An english-speaker can travel wherever he wants and he can make himself understood.

As a conclusion, I would say that learning english at the university prepares me to face the world in a better way because nowadays english is the language of the world. I think that as a english-speaker I would be a better health caree professional too because I'd use english language as a tool to encourage people from different cultures and countries to take care of themselves. I'd like to encourage people to learn this language because it brings you a lot of benefits. I love this language and I would like to learn more so I will continue studying maybe at an english institute because I want to travel to The U.K in the future.

Midwifery

Midwifery is a health care profession and it's very important for the family. A midwife gives prenatal care to expecting mothers. Also, a midwife attends the birth of the baby and she takes care of the mother after the labor or postpartum.

Some of the important challenges that our trade has to face nowadays is who should be in charge in caring management. Recently we had some problems with the nurses about it. I think that health belongs to everybody and there is a place for every health care profession.

Some of the technologic issues that we have to face is the lack of ultrasound machines in hospitals. They are significant if we want to have a happy pregnancy and succesful births.

If we talk about social matters, a midwife is a very social profession because we educate people, especially women, so they can take care of themselves. In that area, we cand find some problems with the language that we use to teach people. Sometimes, we use a very medical leanguage, so common people don't understand what we say and they keep on doing things that affect their lives.

Education, as I said before, allows us to give people the power of being the main character in their lives, I mean, if they know how to take care of themselves, they shouldn't get sick, so their lives would be a lot better.

Some of the critical issues that are involved in midwifery area or in health area in general, is the lack of resources in every health center. Government doesn't invest money enough to satisfy the great health demand.

The lack of resources involves a bad health attetion from the midwife because every health professional needs some elements to make their labor the best that they can do.

Other issue that we have to face is that people don't have idea about our job, because a midwife attends a lot of process in women's lives. So we have to encourage women to visit their midwives because that's the only way that we have to make a change in their lives. We have to educate women about their sexual health and show them the importance of the midwives in their lives.

All about money

Well, nowadays it's all about money, you need it for buying clothes, food, to pay bills, for everything!. You can't live without it!. Money doesn't make happiness, but it helps a lot. There are days that you wish you have enough money for buying something that you really want. Other times, you have money but you spend it all buying things that you don't need. That's the story of my life. I'm so bad with money because I like to buy expensive things and I spend all my oney at once. I think that's an issue in my life because if I don't learn how to spend money in a rational way, that's gonna be a very big problem when I grow up, I mean, in my life as an adult. Also, I'm a very generous person, so other people often borrow money from me and I don't pay much attention if they pay me back or not, because I don't give money the importance that it deserves. I'm an irresponsible person in that kind of stuff. I don't really like to manage money, in fact, it's something that I use to avoid. I really dread to manage money because as I said before, I'm very irresponsible with it and I don't care about spending all my money at once. I don't have any bills on my own but I use to pay my parents's bills at the bank. Go to the bank and wait a lot of time to be served it's something that I don't like at all, but I have to do it because of my family. I think that public schools and family should teach children how to manage money because if they learn how to do it well, they will be responsible adults and better citizens. It's a shared responsibility. I don't use a bank but I know about my dad's experience. Well, he thinks that banks are a pain in the neck because they are always sending junkmail and they are mean when you have to pay them back. They are bad, but they are necessary.

Improving my faculty

Nowadays, my faculty isn't as well as it should be. There's a lot of things that should get better. Some of the things that need to improve are, for example, the microscopes because when we have Histology's seminar we can't see the samples as close as possible. Another problem are the bathrooms because they never have soap or toilet paper and some W.C, well, they just don't work. Oh, and the library is in very bad condition, there aren't a lot of computers and just a part of them actually work. The books that we have are ancient and some of them are falling apart. The first thing that I would do to deal with the actual situation of my faculty is to put more money in this issues because they are very important for the right developing of the students. I think people should feel confortable at their work place, so I make sure that the bathrooms always were clean and with toilet paper and soap. I'd buy more books, the newest edition of each one of them and I'd fix the broken ones. I would buy more personal computers and I'd give the old ones for charity or I'd send them to recycle. I would buy new microscopes and I'd invest more money in investigation because this country needs more scientists to grow. But, I think that you're wondering, how I will get the money to do those kind of things. Well, I think that the government should give us that money because we are the most important chilean university, I mean, we have a very long traditionn of excellece. This improvements will change the lifestyle of a lot of students at this faculty because they could depend on the library that always is going to be avalaible books and computers to use and nowadays that issue stress the people.

The Winter

The season of the year that I like the most is the winter. I like it because it's a rainy season and I love the rain (of course when I'm wearing the appropriate clothes , not like today, well It's not my fault, I thought that today was gonna be a sunny day). I love winter clothes like coats because they're so warming and also beautiful. I have a lot of coats and I'm thinking about buying more for the next winter season. Also, I like to wear a scarf to protect my neck from the cold. I have a favourite scarf. It's white and very long and my mom made it for me at the beggining of the season. I used to use it everyday. I like to use wollen gloves of different colours too. Well, as you see, I love winter clothes.

I like winter more than summer because the cold is easier to led with than the hot of every sunny day. I mean, If you wear the appropriate clothes, as I said before, you're fine and you can go everywhere with no problem at all. But when it's hot, there isn't anything you can do to avoid it.

I think that Santiago looks more beautiful in winter, especially after a pouring rain, because after that, everywhere looks so clean, the sky turns from gray to blue and you can breath fresh air.

Where to go and what to do in Santiago?

Well, if a friend of mine would come to visite me from other country, the first place that I'd take her or him is to "Cerro San Cristóbal" because it's a beautiful place, with a lot of nature, it's like an oasis in the middle of the city. If you go there, you also can visit the "Jardín Japonés" and take some pictures, because it has a very oriental environment, it's like to be in Asia. After that, I'd take him (let's suppose that my friend is a boy) to walk around Providencia because that part of the city has so much things to see and places to visit. We can go to "Drugstore" which is like a place with a lot of stores and you can find things like sunglasses and different kinds of clothes. Then we can walk downtown or take a bus and we will arrive to "Plaza Italia", a famous place of Santiago, because people go there to celebrate sport triumphs. After that we can go to "Parque Forestal" and have an ice cream in "Emporio La Rosa" which is a good place to meet friends. After that I'd take him to Barrio Lastarria and we could watch a movie in "El Biógrafo" a very ancient cinema. Santiago has a lot of places to go, an every place can be a good place if you are in a good mood and with someone that you really care.

MUSIC

I like to dance so I like music too. I really enjoyed when I go out with my friends and we dance and laugh all night long. I think music is a very nice way to let your feelings show up and, at less for me, when I listen to music that I like, it's like a great moment to relax and clean your mind. I like to listen to english music because it's a good way to learn more and improve this language. I love english accent, I like it more than american accent. So, my favourite bands and singers are from The United Kingdom. I really love the music that come from that country, since The Beatles to the newest band that are appearing nowadays. I like rock, but indie rock. Indie comes from independent and it means when the bands do their music for themselves. The thing that I like the most is the style of the indie bands. The outfits that they use are original and with a lot of attitude. My favourite indie bands are The Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Hot Hot Heat, Kaiser Chiefs and I could go on with many more names but I think that I make myself clear about it. My favourite singer is Jarvis Cocker. He is from England and I started to listen to his music when I was 12 years old. He is from a band called Pulp, but nowadays he sings alone. Last year I had the chance to see him on concert and it was a lot of fun, because it's very different to hear the songs on the radio than to be in a concert, with all the excitement and happiness that you feel in that moment.
